In the late nineteenth century, in London, Robert Angier, loving wife Julia McCullough and Alfred Borden are friends and assistants of a magician. When Julia accidentally dies while performing one, Robert blames Alfred for her death and they become enemies. Both became famous magician and competitors, undermining the performance of others on stage. When Alfred made a successful procedure, Robert becomes obsessed trying to disclose the secrets of his competitor with tragic consequences.
