The film opens three weeks after the Malmedy massacre (probably January 14 to 15 January, 1945) with U.S. forces present in the document and recover the bodies. The exhibition is provided by a radio broadcast from London to explain what happened and that those responsible will be found and appropriate treatment.
The film then goes into the days of the Malmedy massacre, December 17, 1944. The four original main characters get a screen time, and all but one have a conversation as they stood in a group as prisoners of war. Suddenly, one of the unknown soldiers out from the group and try to escape. A German soldier shouted for him to stop, and when he does, he shot down. The rest of the inmates became restless, and a German officer to fire a few blasts of air. In response, panic began outbreak. In a scramble for the unexpected, a prisoner of the Allies took a rifle from a German soldier and shot him with it. A German, in turn, kill that soldier. As a result, some inmates to run the break, while some stay and try to stay calm. But when the Germans fired at the prisoners, the entire group of Allied prisoners to break and run. (See below Malmedy massacre.) Nearly half of them made it into the woods, and the rest died.
A German soldier and Gould managed to find a soldier hiding in the woods after a broken tree. German surrender but shot two other soldiers with Gould, so how Gould again. When Germany is approaching to shoot for Gould, Deacon of the German dance and have their guns. The surrender of Germany, and Deacon let him run off into the forest. Gould protests by stressing that Germany should have been killed. This set up the first tension between Gould and Deacon.
