A girl brings home her latest boyfriend to meet her parents. This is done against the background of random shootings that had just begun in NYC at the time the play was written. How the family’s failings are magnified by the social confusion of the times is the crux of the plot.
This is a pretty strange little flick about dysfunction in NYC in the early 70′s. I’m glad I did not have the misfortune to grow up in such a place. This is very oddball humor at times, but if Jules Pfeiffer was involved (and he was) then that accounts for that. Elliot Gould plays a photographer just coasting along through life, when he meets Patsy. Patsy wants to mold him and change him. He’s not very moldable. There are a few scenes that are more than a little surprising, like a certain sniper scene that came out of nowhere, and pretty well changes the whole tone of the movie. Donald Sutherland has a brief role as a priest, one of them there hippie priests, which is done pretty well. The ending is one of the strangest I’ve seen, kind of a “if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em” sort of ending. This is a little slow in parts and while I like Alan Arkin he was very busy directing apparently and therefore only makes a brief appearance as a police captain. Overall I found this to be a interesting watch, but I will say that not everyone will find this to their liking. A bit too oddball, maybe one reason why this is so hard to find.
